Best Crossbow Under 400 – Top 10 in 2021 [Guide & Top Picks]

You might be wondering, what is he up to? Is he planning to share crossbows for every $100?  What if I am? You would like it, wouldn’t you? Today we are going to talk about Top 10 of the best crossbow under 400 dollars. We are getting to a mark where finding a solid crossbow is not far off from the target.

Under $400, there are quite a few crossbows. In terms of speed, a lot of them are comparable with more expensive crossbows. Before we get distracted, let’s start the article.

Best Crossbow Under 400

1. CenterPoint Sniper 370 Crossbow Package

Speed 370 FPS
Kinetic Energy 130 FP KE
Power Stroke 13.50"
Draw Weight 185 lbs
Axle-To-Axle (Cocked) 18.00"

Do you ever listen to a song in the morning and feel like your entire mood is better? You do right? That’s right, today we are starting the day with a banger. CenterPoint Sniper 370 might be the best crossbow under 400. Pretty bold claim right? Let me explain why it isn’t.

CenterPoint is not a new name in the game. They are making crossbows for decades now. Even at their lowest price point, CenterPoint never cheaps out on the quality.

Sniper 370 stock and the body is quite well built and sturdy. The rail of the crossbow is made out of CNC machined aluminum. It’s durable and suitable for crossbows. The reason is, the friction with the string is quite low here. That’s why the string should last longer than any average crossbows.

As the crossbow is made out of machined aluminum, the total weight of the crossbow is also quite low. You can’t expect a carbon fiber at this price. There is a free 4×32 crossbow scope on top. The scope is out of the box calibrated for 50 yards. You need to re-calibrate it.

The speed of this crossbow deserves an award for it. CenterPoint claims the speed is 370 FPS. That’s a bold claim. For this price, anything over 350 is a blessing. On my testing I found the max speed to be 368 FPS. That’s more than good.

Keep in mind environment and the bolt type plays a big role behind the speed of a crossbow.

The draw weight however is on the higher end. 185lbs is not a small number. You can use a rope cocker to cut it down. Still, it would have been better if the draw weight was lower. You can see why I think this is one of the if not the best crossbow under $400. It nails all the important aspects of a crossbow right.

2. Barnett Whitetail Hunter II Crossbow

Speed 350 FPS
Kinetic Energy 103 FP KE
Camo Pattern Realtree Extra
Draw Weight 150 lbs
Axle-To-Axle (Cocked) 16.125"

I sometimes get confused between the Barnett and CenterPoint crossbows names. Their names are so similar. Whitetail Hunter II is the direct competitor of CenterPoint Sniper.

First thing first, this is my personal opinion, in terms of the design scheme. Barnett has CenterPoint beat. Then again, this is entirely subjective. You are more than welcome to have your opinion.

The build quality of this crossbow is excellent. Every part of the crossbow is either made out of aluminum. Or synthetic such as the stock. That’s why the overall weight of this crossbow is just 6.4 pounds.

The trigger system is more advanced than most other crossbows at this price range. Barnett calls it the TrigerTech system. It’s a low creep (3pounds) metal injected trigger.

Alongside the 4×32 illuminated scope. Barnett also provides a rope cocking device for free. With these Barnett also includes 2 20″ headhunter arrows and a lightweight cover.

Barnett wanted to stay one step ahead of their competitors. The only thing Barnett lacks behind the CenterPoint sniper is in terms of speed. Compared to Sniper where we had a 370 FPS top speed. Whitetail Hunter II has a max of 350 FPS. This is quite good for hunting and regular archery.

If you are coming new to the scene, you won’t even notice a 20 FPS difference from the go. I can easily recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great budget crossbow.

3. BearX Intense Ready to Shoot Crossbow

Speed 400 FPS
Kinetic Energy Unknown
Power Stroke 12.70"
Sport Type Tactical & Military
Axle-To-Axle 10" / 14"

BearX Intense. This crossbow is available in 3 different finishes. Depending on the finish you choose, it may cost you over $400. The one we got was Stoke. It’s priced lower than $400. It’s one of the most compact crossbows we have on our list today. When cocked the width is only 10″. It’s less than an Ipad.

When the crossbow is uncocked, the width is 14″. It’s not that big at all. You can take it to places where you could only imagine taking them. The main selling point of this crossbow is its speed. It can fire at 400 FPS! It’s the highest on the list thus far.

If you read a couple of reviews about this crossbow. You know this crossbow is capable of firing at 390 FPS and beyond constantly. That’s more than good for me. BearX managed to put together an excellent piece of a crossbow. It’s small, lightweight, fast, looks beautiful.

Everything you want in your first crossbow is present on this one. The included scope is also pretty decent. It’s one of the best crossbow scopes out there. The scope is also illuminated, that’s a plus point. Like all other crossbows on the list, this one also features anti-dry fire to prevent dry firing.

BearX will give you 3 Bear X TrueX arrows, 4-arrow quiver, cocking rope, and rail lube/wax. Everything you want as a beginner, you are getting them. This can be an excellent gift for someone new at this scene.

4. BARNETT Whitetail Hunter STR Crossbow

Speed 375 FPS
Kinetic Energy 118 FP KE
Camo Pattern Mossy Oak Bottomland
Scope 4x32mm Multi-Reticle
Axle-To-Axle (Cocked) 18.125"

Barnett and their naming schemes. I already complained twice about names today, didn’t I? Anyway, Whitetail Hunter STR is the second-fastest crossbow on today’s list. It can fire at an incredible 375 FPS speed. Beating the CenterPoint Sniper by 5 FPS.

However, that 5 FPS won’t hold a significant value in day to day use. On-field, both of them fires at a similar speed. You can call Whitetail Hunter STR the compact version of Sniper.

When cocked, the axle-to-axle width is only 8″. That’s quite an achievement. To put it in context, the best compact crossbow on the market, Ravin R29 a $2300 crossbow comes down to 6″ when cocked. You can guess how amazing the job Barnett did with this one.

Whitetail Hunter STR also features Barnett’s frictionless release system. Thanks to this the string of your bow will last for a long time. It’s a free $200 trigger system update that you will get if you buy this crossbow.

The step-thru riser is made out of fiberglass. It’s durable but not as durable as aluminum. I didn’t face any issue regarding this. It’s safe to assume, Barnett wouldn’t put a fragile material on their product. Overall, an excellent crossbow. It’s genuinely surprising that we are getting so good crossbows by paying so little.

5. PSE ARCHERY Fang HD Crossbow Package

Speed 405 FPS
Kinetic Energy 134 FP KE
Power Stroke 14.50"
Draw Weight 205 lbs
Axle-To-Axle (Cocked) 18.00"

PSE Archery is one of my favorite budget crossbow makers. Don’t worry, any kind of favoritism won’t happen here. How can you even think I will be biased towards them? Didn’t you read the part that I said about CenterPoint Sniper?

I like how all these crossbows are going at each other’s throat. Fang HD is here to dethrone the fastest crossbow on the list. Once again Fang HD has beat BearX Intense by 5 FPS.

That’s right Fang HD is capable of firing bolts at 405 FPS. It’s like a bidding war is going on and each of them is increasing the bid by 5 FPS. We can’t complain, competition is good for us consumers.

Fang HD includes the best scope on the list by far. The included HDV 425 is variable scope. That’s right you can increase and decrease the magnification of this crossbow scope.

The reticle is also illuminated. It’s a good thing PSE Archery thought through this far. A variable magnification scope going to help this crossbow unleash its true potential.

Another great thing about this crossbow is how deadly accurate this one is. If the wind is in your favor and you know how to read the bullet drop. I can guarantee you will nail more shots with this one. It’s not the most compact crossbow. But it’s one of the best crossbows under $400.

6. Killer Instinct Burner 415 Crossbow

Speed 415 FPS
Kinetic Energy 141 FP KE
Power Stroke 14.50"
Draw Weight 220 lbs
Axle-To-Axle 14.75" / 18.75"

Lo and behold. Another contestant on the stage to dethrone another crossbow. It didn’t even take them 5 minutes to dethrone the previous contender.

Burner from Killer Instinct was born with a killer instinct that’s for sure. It’s like it has a burning fire inside of it. Come on, admit it, it was good. Ok don’t laugh, I will laugh at my jokes, alone. Anyway.

The burner is capable of generating an incredible speed of 415 FPS. It got the Fang HD beat by 10 FPS. The good thing about this crossbow is, it’s capable of firing arrows at 400 and more FPS constantly.

Killer Instinct uses its own Enhanced Micro-Lite aluminum barrel to enhance the speed of their crossbow. Thanks to this rifle like barrel design, there isn’t much friction going on between the barrel and the bowstring. That’s good because it will keep the string healthy for a long time.

Killer Instinct includes a LUMIX 4 x 32 IR-W Scope, Rope Cocker, String Suppressors, 3-Bolt Quiver, three 370 grains HYPR Lite Bolts and lube. That’s a long list of free stuff.

If speed is your main priority, you know what to go for. With the help of Lumix scope. You can easily take down prey at 60 or more yards. This is an excellent choice for hunting.

7. Barnett TS370 Crossbow Package

Speed 370 FPS
Kinetic Energy 115 FP KE
Power Stroke 12.50"
Draw Weight 187 lbs
Axle-To-Axle (Cocked) 16.125"

Much like CenterPoint Sniper TS370 is capable of firing 20″ arrows at 370 FPS. In terms of design, the aesthetic is quite good. But it’s not the most compact crossbow. It’s fairly compact.

Barnett is known for using some of the best materials available on the market. Rest assured, you can easily use this crossbow for over 2-3 years.

If you don’t like the vibration and noise a string makes after firing. Then you should get a string dampener for them. Barnett won’t provide you them for free. If you look for them, you can find them quite cheap.

Earlier I said this crossbow is capable of firing bolts at 370 FPS. That’s more than what I expect from a $400 crossbow. Thankfully, the speed is quite consistent. As long as you use the same grain arrow, you will get quite accurate results.

The only downside of this crossbow is, it’s fairly old. Finding spare parts can be troublesome. But Barnett did promise, they will support the crossbow regardless.

8. Centerpoint Mercenary 390 FPS Crossbow

Speed 390 FPS
Kinetic Energy 135 FP KE
Power Stroke 14.50"
Draw Weight 185 lbs
Axle-To-Axle (Cocked) 18.00"

Centerpoint Archery Mercenary is another great sub $400 crossbow. Surprisingly it provides more speed than the most balanced Sniper 370.

The difference is also quite high and noticeable. 20 FPS is a big number for crossbows. In certain scenes, it can be a game-changer. The cam system is made out of CNC aluminum.

Mercenary 390 has 4 pairs of limb silencers. Their job is to reduce the vibration and make the crossbow more silent.

The stock is made out of synthetic material. The cheekpiece is adjustable. You can increase the height of the cheekpiece if you like. if you want to buy a cranker in the future, you can take this one. Mercenary is compatible with the cranking device.

As for speed, we already mentioned that. The included scope is your standard 4×32 illuminated reticle crossbow scope. It’s nothing extraordinary. But will get the job done. It’s a good crossbow overall. Certainly on par with Sniper. Better in some aspects too.

9. Carbon Express Blade X-Force Blade Crossbow

Speed 320 FPS
Kinetic Energy 86.3 FP KE
Power Stroke 13.00"
Draw Weight 165 lbs
Axle-To-Axle 13.00" / 17.50"

This is the least expensive crossbow on today’s list. To no one’s surprise, this is also one of the slowest crossbows on the list. By slow, I don’t mean 200 FPS or something. Blade X-Force is capable of firing at 320 FPS. It’s far above an average crossbow.

Anything above 300 is decent in my book. Carbon Express includes a string dampener inside the packaging. If the string sound is too much for you, you can always use them to lower it down a bit.

This is also one of the best lightweight crossbow under 400. Even though their names are carbon express, unfortunately, they don’t use carbon fiber on their crossbows. Let’s be real, if they were to use carbon fiber on this crossbow it would cost over $1000.

The included scope is okayish. It performs fairly well under sunlight. But fails to deliver acceptable performance in low-light. If you were searching for the cheapest crossbow on today’s list. This is the one you waited for so long.

10. Barnett Jackal Crossbow Package

Speed 315 FPS
Kinetic Energy 95 FP KE
Power Stroke 12.00"
Draw Weight 150 lbs
Dimensions 35.5 x 26.5"

Barnett Jackal is priced lower than $300. At the same time, the limited edition Jackal is priced over $600. It’s a decently powerful crossbow with a 3.5lbs trigger pull. That’s enough for newbies to not misfire.

The speed of this crossbow is not that high. It shouldn’t surprise you either. Coming at 315 FPS with a 95-foot point of kinetic energy behind every shot. It’s just enough to pierce through the skin and meat of a deer.

If you were thinking of buying this as your next deer hunting goto. Then for sure, you can pull the trigger. Even though anti-dry fire and trigger creep will stop you from accidentally firing it.

The included scope is not bad. It’s enough for 50 yards or so shooting. Beyond that, it’s terrible. Even though the crossbow can shoot over 60 yards, the marking on the scope is not accurate beyond 60-70 yards at all. You have to be experienced with bullet drop to know the accurate reading at that point.

It’s an excellent choice for beginner archers. You can practice on 30 to 50 yards target easily. For the money, this one provides an incredible value. You shouldn’t be surprised if this crossbow gets featured on our website more than once.
