You can use spotting scopes for many things. The most common use is for birdwatching, digiscoping, or hunting. Sometimes you don’t want to do any of this. You want a spotting scope that will help you in the military or target shooting.
For that purpose, tactical spotting scopes exist. On the surface, there are not many differences between the two. When you dive in a bit, you will start to notice why they are called tactical spotting scopes.
Mark 4 is a tactical scope. In this Leupold Mark 4 12-40×60 review, I will try to explain who should buy this and why. Without further ado let’s start –
Leupold Mark 4 12-40X60: Outlooks
Specifications | Magnification: 12 – 40x; Objective Lens: 60 mm; Eye Relief: 30 mm; Exit Pupil: 4.8 – 1.5 mm; Linear FOV @1000 yds: 168 – 52 ft; Length: 12.4 Inches; Weight: 37 Oz.
Mark 4 is made for military-grade use. If the build quality is not good, then no one would buy it. This is Leupold we are talking about. They are not someone that will sell a bad product to you. Granted quality control issue happens to everyone. But that’s not a case here either.
The housing of this scope is made out of magnesium. A lightweight and durable composite. As for the outside of the housing, Leupold uses a rubber armor coating. It strengthens the build even more. Making it scratch resistant and easier to grab. The inside of the housing is nitrogen purged. Leupold made sure Mark 4 is fogproof.
The housing of the scope is good. Is the inside of the housing equally good? Short answer, yes. The lenses are fully multi-coated with multiple layers of anti-glare coatings. Leupold used a BaK4 prism inside Mark 4. BaK4 is known to produce a bright and crisp image.
You pair that with a fully multi-coated 60mm objective lens. You can already imagine how crisp the images will turn out to be. The outer part of all of the lenses is coated with anti-scratch coatings.
Magnifying with this scope is quite smooth. Edge-to-edge clarity eliminates any chances of distortion. The base magnification of this scope is 12x. You can gradually increase that to 40x with the help of the magnification ring. The coating on the lens is spread quite evenly. That’s why you won’t notice a single bit of distortion at maximum magnification.
Wait a minute, reticle? Is this a riflescope review? No, you didn’t read that wrong. Mark 4 does come with a tactical Milling dot reticle.
Earlier I mentioned this is a tactical spotting scope. To help you aim better and gather more information about your surroundings. Mark 4 comes with a reticle.
The reticle is called a tactical milling reticle. The design is a lot like my favorite Christmas tree style. The reticle is not heavy on the eyes. It won’t block your view either. Reticle comes in handy when you are practicing long-range targets. Even for hunting, this scope will be awesome.
Twilight Max Light Management System
Every Leupold scope has its revolutionary Twilight Light Management System built-in. This technology enhances the vision of the scope without even using ED or HD glass.
The job of this light management system is to utilize as much as light it can. When that happens, you don’t waste any lights, making the images bright and vibrant.
- Good build & optics quality.
- No distortion.
- Smooth magnification.
- Water & fogproof.
- Tactical milling reticle.
- Good warranty.
- Twilight max light management system.
- A bit on the heavier side.
- Not recommended for digiscoper and birders.
Leupold Mark 4 12-40X60 Review Summary
In short, if you are looking for a birdwatching spotting scope. This is not it. If you are looking for a spotting scope with a reticle that won’t break your bank either. This is it.
