Tenpoint Viper S400 Review: Viper! Hunting! Related?

TenPoint doesn’t need any introduction. All of us know about them by now. In case you don’t know, they are one of the most well-renowned crossbow manufacturers on the market.

Most of their crossbows are high-end crossbows that perform excellently. TenPoint Viper S400 is no different. It’s a high-end offering from TenPoint. But is the Viper S400 worth your money? Why is it priced so high yet so aggressively? Let’s find that out in this TenPoint Viper S400 review.

Tenpoint Viper S400: Outlooks

Tenpoint Viper S400

Specifications | Speed: 400 FPS; Kinetic Energy: 135 ft.lbs; Power Stroke: 11 Inches; Draw Style: Forward-Draw; Axle To Axle: 7.2 / 11 Inches; Length: 32 Inches; Weight: 7.5 LBS.

Build Quality

You are paying a good amount of money for this crossbow. It’s reasonable that you want a good-quality build quality. That’s what you are going to get with the Viper S400. Without any accessories, the weight of the Viper is 7.4 lbs. While it may be heavier than the viper you find in jungles, it’s still lightweight for a crossbow. With accessories, consider this 8lbs.

TenPoint Viper S400 is a forward-draw crossbow. It’s narrower than most other compound crossbows on the market. In this price range, all of the crossbows fight each other for the most compact crossbow position. The width of this crossbow is 7.2 inches. That’s super compact. I know it’s not the most compact crossbow on the market. It’s still fairly compact.

The Micro-Trac barrel is the best barrel technology on the market. It’s proven to reduce the friction between the barrel and the string. It’s proven to last more than 1300 shots. Which is way higher than any other crossbows on the market. With proper maintenance and regular lubing, the lifespan can be taken a bit higher too. In short, the build quality of the Viper S400 is excellent.

Power

For hunting or target practice, a crossbow needs to be fairly powerful. You don’t need the most expensive crossbow for hunting. If your crossbow can generate a handsome amount of power, you can do anything with that. In this case, the Viper S400 is capable of 135 ft-lbs of kinetic energy. That’s more than enough to slay any target you see.

Speed

At this point, I would seem like I am ranting against crossbow naming. I mean, can you blame me? Once again, they spoiled the speed of the crossbow in the name.

That’s right, TenPoint Viper S400 is capable of firing 370 grains of arrows at up to 400 FPS. Each shot will pack around 135 ft-lbs of kinetic energy. It’s safe to assume whatever gets hit by this, may it rest in peace.

Draw Weight

The draw weight of a crossbow is always a hot topic. Here the draw weight of the TenPoint Viper S400 is questionable. It’s questionable till you notice the AcuDraw Pro cocker and safe de-cocker are included in the package.

With the cocker installed, you will need a cocking force of only 5 lbs. That’s insane! It’s way lower than most other crossbows on the market. Beats all of its competition in this price range. That’s why I highly recommend this crossbow. It will be helpful for anyone who struggles with the high draw weight.

Accuracy

Named after a venomous snake, the Viper S400 has a reputation to keep. It does keep exactly that. The accuracy of this crossbow is deadly on point. It can hit the same target 3 times in a row without any issues. Keep in mind the wind will play a big role while testing out the accuracy.

T1 Trigger

Most crossbows in this price range opt for the TriggerTech trigger, and TenPoint went for the T1 trigger. Which is arguably a better trigger than TriggerTech. That’s totally on paper. In reality, both of them perform well and are some of the best triggers on the market.

As for the creep, it’s a frictionless trigger system with zero creeps involved. Zero creep increases the accuracy of a crossbow by a lot.

Pros

  • Good build quality.
  • String lifetime up to 1300 shots.
  • Highly accurate.
  • Dead silent.
  • Lightweight & Compact.
  • 400 FPS.
  • Safe cocking and de-cocking.

Cons

  • Using the included arrow, you will never reach 400 FPS or 135 ft-lbs of kinetic energy.
