Excalibur GRZ2 Review: Best Beginner Recurve Crossbow

Excalibur GRZ2 is a beginner-level crossbow from Excalibur Crossbows. Most of the time, large manufacturers tend to overlook the budget and beginner segment. Beginners need a decently powerful crossbow that will make crossbow shooting fun for them.

If you are not having fun with what you are doing, you will never pursue that. Excalibur GRZ2 is here to change that. How will it do that? To find that out, you need to keep reading the review. Without further distraction, let’s begin.

Excalibur GRZ2: Outlooks

Excalibur GRZ2

Specifications | Speed: 305 FPS; Kinetic Energy: 72.3 ft.lbs; Power Stroke: 11.2 Inches; Draw Weight: 200 LBS; Axle To Axle: 26 / 30.5 Inches; Length: 33.25 Inches; Weight: 5.5 LBS.

Build Quality

By the look of it, you already know it’s not the most durable crossbow on the market. From some point of view, it may even look like a toy. I won’t blame you for that. Excalibur tends to slack on the design department.

Rest assured, you will get a decently built crossbow. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it will get the job done. There is no deck flex to worry about. Unless you are trying your best to break it, I don’t see it snapping at you.

The weight of the Excalibur GRZ2 is only 5.5 lbs. One of the lightest crossbows on the market. For a beginner, it’s excellent. As you don’t need to carry a heavy-duty crossbow on your back the whole day.

Power

Excalibur GRZ2 is not a powerful crossbow. It’s a bridge for the newcomers to enter the vast world of crossbows. Excalibur GRZ2 can generate 72.3 ft-lbs kinetic energy only. It’s not enough to participate in competitions or big-game hunting. But it’s enough to help you learn crossbow.

If you were looking for a crossbow capable of doing big-game hunting, you are in the wrong place. For everyone else, this can be the gateway to something even bigger.

Speed

As it’s a beginner-friendly crossbow, Excalibur had to make sure they didn’t go overboard with it. You won’t get high speed with this crossbow. The maximum speed of this crossbow is 305 FPS only.

I know 305 FPS is not that slow either. But compared to other crossbows (which are also more expensive), it could have been a bit faster. Then again, Excalibur GRZ2 doesn’t pack much power.

Draw Weight

Excalibur crossbows tend to have a high draw weight. That’s true here too. The draw weight of Excalibur GRZ2 is 200 lbs. Using the included rope cocker, you can cut down the draw weight by half. Without it, you will have a hard time loading the crossbow.

Safety

Safety is a valid concern for a crossbow. You don’t want your crossbow to misfire on your back. Here instead of using anti-dry fire, Excalibur used manual safety. Anit-dry fire is an expensive feature, that’s why Excalibur skipped on that. Manual safety is quite good. It won’t fire on your back that’s for sure.

Noise And Vibration

By default, the crossbow is quite silent. But it’s not completely silent by any means. If you want to make it completely silent, then you need to use string dampeners. Excalibur doesn’t include any. Try to wax the flight rail regularly. It will increase the longevity of the string and reduce the noise.

Pros

  • Excellent build quality.
  • Affordable.
  • Beginner friendly.
  • Lightweight.
  • Accurate and easy to maneuver.

Cons

  • Not the fastest crossbow on the market.
  • Doesn’t come with noise suppressors.

Excalibur GRZ2 Review Summary

For a beginner, this crossbow is everything you need. It’s not that expensive. It can still give you the thrill of hunting. It’s fairly accurate and lightweight. An ideal choice for anyone who wants to start using a crossbow.

If you are a beginner, I know you will appreciate this Excalibur GRZ2 crossbow review. I don’t recommend this to veterans due to the low speed and power. Besides that, it’s a good crossbow and you will enjoy using it.
