The Remington Tac 14 is a part of the Remington 870 family that works exactly like the 870. It’s also a not-so-terrible stock gun. With some tweaks here and there and adding some upgrades on the weapon will make it a much better hunting gun than it already is.
Well, like the Mossberg 500 (hyperlink) and the Remington 870 (hyperlink), upgrading the Tac 14 is not as easy as it seems. Well, you are here to make things easier, right? I will not make you wait further and let’s find out the best Remington Tac 14 upgrades.
Remington Tac 14 Brace Upgrades
The first thing you would notice at the Tac 14 is the brace. Or rather, the lack of a brace. The pistol-style design gives you the false hope that you can operate this with one hand. That’s far from the reality.
1. Gear Head Works Tailhook Mod 2 Pistol Stabilizing Brace
Gear Head Works are one of the best brace makers in the market. They don’t make braces for every single gun, but the ones that they do end up making are wonderful, to say the least. This brace is not directly compatible with your gun.
You will need an Ergo 870 Stock adapter to install this on your custom Tac 14. Without this, your Tac 14 upgrades will fall short. The brace itself is made out of polymer. It’s a very durable and lightweight material. Some people think that polymer is a cheap material and they think like plastic toys. That’s far from the truth.
The brace is also adjustable. You will have a total of 5 adjustable positions to choose from. You can increase it from 7.375” to a maximum of 10”. That’s a lot of customization for such a small brace. The cheek of this pad is comfortable as well.
2. SB Tactical Tac14-SBM4 Brace Kit
You might be wondering what’s SB Tactical doing here. Aren’t they mostly known for their pistol and AR braces? That’s true. Those braces that they make are wonderful. But this brace here is specifically designed for the Tac 14.
This brace is made out of polymer and it’s a complete kit. Not only are you getting a brace, you are also getting a pistol receiver extension. The necessary adapter for the pistol handle and the brace is included in the package. If you are after increasing the stability of your gun and making it more comfortable, this all-in-one kit is the perfect choice for you.
Remington Tac 14 Grip Upgrades
The next obvious thing after the brace is upgrading the grips. If you have ditched the stock for a brace already, then you will need to purchase a pistol grip. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use it the way Remington intended you to use it.
1. Ergo 2 Ambidextrous SureGrip
If you decided that you won’t go with the SBM4 kit, then you are without a pistol grip right now. To fix that issue, this AR 15 pistol grip is the perfect choice for you. This grip is supported by the Ergo 870 adapter.
The grip is made out of polymer and it’s durable. It’s the same type of polymer you see in modern handguns. They are heat resistant to a degree and they are extremely grippy as well. All without having the sticky residue of a rubber grip.
Remington Tac 14 Pump Upgrade
The stock pump is not that bad. It’s fun to work with and it gets the job done. But that’s about it. It’s nothing fancy nor does it offer a lot of accessory options either. If you want to add some accessories under the gun, then you might want to change the pump as well.
1. Streamlight TL-Racker 1000 Lumen Forend Light
As this follows the same pattern as the Remington 870, it supports a lot of accessories from that gun. This Streamlight pump is a 2-in-one system. It’s a weapon light that will provide you with great vision during the night and it’s the pump of your gun as well.
Unlike other Streamlight weapon lights, this one is not made out of aluminum. It’s understandable as it would have increased the cost of making and made it heavy as well. The pump is made out of solid nylon. Another durable polymer-like material known for long-lasting.
2. Magpul MOE M-Lok Remington 870 Forend
This M-Lok forend is the best friend of all Remington 870 and Tac 14 owners. This forend is more durable than the stock one and it also comes with the option of adding any M-Lok accessories down the line. Let me tell you! There are lots of M-Lok accessories available on the market right now!
The material for this forend is a polymer. You probably guessed that already. After all, Magpul mostly works with polymers. This one is extremely durable and lightweight. Magpul Also provides good after-sales.
Remington Tac 14 Sight Upgrades
Despite being a shotgun, it still could benefit from a sight upgrade. The iron sight is cool and all, but if you are upgrading the gun, why not add in a cooler sight? Who doesn’t want their shotgun to look something out of a sci-fi movie? Well, maybe not you. But you get my point. A sight will improve your aim.
1. Crimson Trace LS-970 Laser Sight
This laser sight from Crimson Trace is available for other guns as well. But the unfortunate little brother Tac 13 is neglected it seems.
The sight body is made out of polymer and it’s quite durable. It also packs a 5 mW laser with a peak 670 nm Class 3R red laser. It’s completely state-legal and you can use this for hunting as well. Unless stated otherwise by your state. The battery life is quite good.
2. Trinity Remington 870 12GA Red Dot Sight
This sight is mostly bought by people for the adapter. The combo is cheap and people often overlook the sight. In my opinion, you shouldn’t overlook the sight. For the price, it performs as well as a shotgun red dot possibly can.
It’s made out of aluminum and glass that is coated. While the durability of the sight is not the greatest, it still can last you a year or two depending on use. But like most, you also can upgrade to a Holosun HS510C if you wish to. That sight is a billion times better than this and also costs a lot more.
That’s it? No More Upgrades?
As far as major upgrades go, those are it. They are the best Tac 14 upgrades you can do as of now. If companies come up with new accessories that revolutionize the shotgun market, then it might change. But here are some other minor upgrades that you can consider that will make your shotgun experience a bit more comfortable.
Sling
Slings are underrated. The weight of this gun is not heavy enough for you to warrant a sling. But it’s not the lightest thing in the world either. And if you can just keep the gun on your back like a bag, then why not? There are tons of slings available for shotgun but to me, S2Delta is the one that stood out the most.
Shell Holder
Shotgun shells are heavy and bulky. You will need something to store them in and carry them with you when needed. While it’s “optional” for me it’s a must. Shell holders will give you the option to carry a lot more ammo than you hoped for. ProMag AA112 is a good choice for shell holders that won’t ruin your bank.
Conclusion
Now, do you want to upgrade your Tac 14? Or sell it and buy a Remington 870 and upgrade the Remington 870 instead? I would say, that depends on the person that is using the gun. The Tac 14 has its cult followers and is very deservingly so. The gun is great and has the potential to make it even better.
You can either go based on the budget you have in your hand or upgrade the things that are necessary for you. For example, the sight upgrade will already make it a better gun for you and the brace upgrade will change the experience completely.
If it were up to me, I would upgrade the Tac 14 in a heartbeat and use it even more than before. But if you decide against it and change weapons completely, chances are I have already provided an upgrade guide for that.
