HOW TO USE A SPOTTING SCOPE?
To use a spotting scope, you will have to follow the following procedure:
ATTACH THE SCOPE TO THE TRIPOD OF THE GUN
The scope will be firm and stable on the tripod. That will stabilize it, and hence the chances of missing the target will be very low. The tripod is very stable, and hence the need to attach the scope to it.
If you decide to place it somewhere else apart from the tripod, you will not have a clear view of the target. That means that you will not hit the target with precision.
FIND A COMFORTABLE POSITION/LOCATION
Sometimes, the target may delay arriving. That happens, especially when you are out for game hunting. Holding the gun for long as you wait will make you tiresome. You can either stand or sit as you wait, but it is always advisable to get a comfortable position.
The position that you choose should also allow you to use the scope properly without hindrances and challenges. There should be no barrier between you and the target. The target should not spot you either.
TEST-VIEW THE TARGET AREA
It will be hard to determine if you have full control of the target area without doing some testing. That will enable you to master the area where the target is. You also need to have a perfect view before making any adjustments to the lenses.
It will help to avoid encountering problems when the target appears. Remember that the rule is to view the target area first before any adjustments. A lot of shooters fail in the process because they begin adjusting before viewing. It is wrong, and you should avoid doing that at all costs.
ADJUST THE MAGNIFICATION LEVELS
When you have viewed the target area, you can now adjust the magnification levels to the target. Spotting scopes differ in design and construction. Therefore, you have to adjust according to your make.
Always read the instruction on the user manual before making adjustments or using the spotting scope. Take care of the user manual and store it safely. You will need it when challenges arise.
If yours has zoom options, that will even be better because you will be able to adjust the position of the target accordingly.
Set your scope until you achieve a clear view of the target at any range.
RESET THE FOCUS FOR A NEWER AREA
Using the magnification lens for long can cause some discomfort to the eye. In some cases, it can even make one have a mild headache. The effects are even worse if you use a highly magnified lens for long.
When such happen, readjust the magnification to reduce and or minimize these effects. It will not only help you reduce the impact but to also regain concentration. Resetting the scope will also help you keep a close eye on the target, and hence making it easier to hit it.
STRAIGHT SPOTTING SCOPES
The straight spotting scope has the body and the eyepiece on the same horizontal plane. Both are in a straight line. It is useful when:
- You are learning how to use a scope. It is perfect for a new user.
- You are doing hunting in a regular/flat area. Such places are where you can easily spot or find animals.
- You are doing a long-range shooting. It helps to reduce the pain and the strain on the neck.
THE ANGLED SPOTTING SCOPES
This spotting scope is not similar to the straight one because the eyepiece lies in 45 degrees to the eye scope. It is useful when:
- You have mastered the art of using the scope. It is ideal for those persons who have used the scope for a long time.
- You want to share the target with other shooters. More than one person can use on the scope for the same or even different targets.
- You are aiming at the targets that are hiding in places such as on top of the tree.
- The tripod that you are using is short.
WHICH IS BETTER BETWEEN THE BINOCULARS AND THE SPOTTING SCOPES?
Both are useful for game hunting. However, the spotting scope is better because it has a higher magnification as compared to binoculars.
Binoculars are suitable when going for hunting or shooting, but its magnification is low, and hence you may miss the target.
Spotting scopes are efficient for game hunting. However, before you engage, you will need to set it. They are of two types, and you should be able to select one that suits your needs. Read the user manual several times to understand how to use the spotting scope. The user manual will also guide you on how to set it.
When going for game hunting, you can also use binoculars, but its effectiveness is lower than that of spotting scopes.
