Finding the best golf irons for yourself is not an easy task. If it was there wouldn’t be so many guides to help you. If you are a beginner and just starting with golf, I recommend reading our best golf club sets guide.
This post is mainly for intermediate people that are already aware of golfing and want to step up their game.
Because we are only going to share irons, it may be a single iron or a complete set of irons. Not a complete club sets with putter and sander.
Best Golf Irons
1. TaylorMade Golf 2018 P790 Men's Iron Set
You may be wondering, what is a set from 2018 doing in a review of 2020? The P790 series is the flagship of iron sets. It’s the best you can buy as a golfer. Many pro players recommended TaylorMade P790.
You can buy this set with either a graphite shaft or steel shaft. My recommendation goes to the graphite shaft. The reason behind this is, graphite is more durable and lightweight than steel. It’s almost on the same scale as titanium. I know titanium is more durable, but let’s just say this for comparison’s sake.
The SpeedFoam technology behind this irons makes it even more useful. SpeedFoam technology was created to make your shots go further. Instead of filling the inside of the head, it remains hollow. TaylorMade then injects 4 grams of SpeedFoam inside the head. It makes the iron more stable and provides better feedback to shots. Which makes the golf ball beyond other irons capabilities.
The irons also feature Tungsten Weight. The weight of the club head’s center gravity is improved highly and making the club more practical. There are a total of 8 irons in this set. By no means this is a complete set of clubs. It is a complete set of irons for sure.
Another thing before you consider buying this, this is not made for beginners, rather intermediate golfers that are planning to go semi-pro or pro tournaments. The price tag alone will scare away the beginners. It’s one of the best golf iron sets that you can currently buy.
2. Cobra Golf 2018 Men's King Forged Iron Set
Coming at just a little over $1000, the Cobra Golf Tec Black iron set is the second one on our list.
The Forged Tec Black iron set uses a shaft made out of steel. The medallion of the iron is made of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber improves the stability of the head and dampens the vibration. If there is low vibration then you will feel solid feedback from each hit.
Tec Black also uses Tungsten Weight. The high-density tungsten is placed on the toe and hill of the head to make it more balance. This helps with the ball speed.
Thanks to this technology the irons are also quite forgiving. Yet I would say they are not beginner-friendly. The price tag is just too much for beginners.
There are a total of 7 irons included in the set. All of them are irons nothing else. You shouldn’t think of it as a complete golf set. If you are upgrading from an average quality golf iron, then the performance difference will blow your socks off.
The long irons are great for long shots and the short provides incredible agility and accuracy. With the catchy black finish, this is one hell of an iron set. If you don’t have any issue regarding the price tag, by all means, indulge yourself in its glory.
3. TaylorMade SIM MAX Combo Set
TaylorMade is always known to provide some of the best golf equipment in the market. The Sim Max is one of them. Priced a little over the $1000 threshold, this golf iron combo set has a lot of potentials.
The SIM technology stands for shape in motion. The base of this iron is its legendary M5 and M6. They based this on the same platform and improved it even further.
This iron was designed for all kinds of golfers. Doesn’t matter you are an intermediate or a beginner, if you enjoy golfing you will enjoy this iron.
TaylorMade worked hard to reduce the vibration and improve the feel when you hit the ball. I have to say they have certainly say that TaylorMade was able to achieve that.
However, there wasn’t any massive difference in terms of speed form the M6. This set of iron is good for both beginner and intermediate. The pricing is the only issue. But I think it’s worth it.
4. Cleveland Golf 2018 Men's Launcher CBX Iron
Cleveland is a well-known brand in the golf scene. The shaft material is graphite. It’s lighter than steel and quite affordable. Even $2000 golf club sets use a graphite shaft.
Graphite is a durable and lightweight material. A lot of you may wonder why not titanium for shafts, the reason is simple titanium is expensive. It’s not practical.
The face of the iron is quite wide. The reason behind this is to help beginners. It’s not expensive either. For a 6 iron set, I say it’s quite a reasonable price.
The CG is moved towards the heel of the iron. This creates a more robust balance and overall better feel. The feel is a key factor in golf. If you get a good feeling of the iron then you can utilize the iron completely.
The short irons are deadly accurate and quite agile. I enjoyed the golfing session that I had with them. The spin producing is quite high on this iron. It’s great for crossroad golfing.
Honestly, it’s one of the best golf iron sets that’s for sure. If you are a mid to high handicapper then you will enjoy this iron very much.
5. TaylorMade Golf M5 Iron Set
TaylorMade M5 iron was revolutionary, to say the least. Precise control with high speed, decent price it was a wet dream for budget-golfers. You guys might put me under the truck to call an $800 set budget. But hear me out, it’s not $2000 is it? For $800 you are getting plenty.
The iron is medium-sized, they are smaller than M6 and more affordable than M6. They look good they perform well. The Speed Brigade technology enhances the speed of this iron set by a lot.
The speed of the M5 is on par with P790. The pricing is on par with M3. What a steal!
Like all the premium iron sets, this set also features tungsten weighting. Tungsten is a premium material for weight. It provides extra maneuverability of the iron.
Forgiveness is quite high and beginner-friendly. Even though the price might not seem beginner-friendly to you. But trust me this set of irons won’t judge you at all. They will help you improve your golfing by a huge margin. Overall it’s an excellent first purchase for any golfer.
6. Callaway Golf 2018 Men's Rogue Irons Set
Callaway needs no introduction. They are one of the if not the best golf-related manufacturer.
The Callaway Rogue iron set is deadly accurate. The rogue iron set features Callaway’s 360 Face Cup and VFT technology. The multi-material construction makes it even more deadly and silent. The speed improvement on this over the predecessor is quite noticeable.
VFT technology stands for Variable Face Thickness. It’s a technology made by Callaway, it works by expanding the face of the iron. It also uses multiple layers of cushioning in the iron face. Making the vibration of the iron almost non-existent.
For the optimal flight, Callaway uses tungsten weighting. The tungsten weighting is positioned in the CG of each iron.
Urethane Microspheres makes the sound so amazing, that I almost cussed while writing this.
It’s one of the best golf iron sets that I have ever come across. I love the feel when you hit the ball. The speed is quite good too. I liked the pricing of this set. It has my full recommendation.
7. TaylorMade M3 Iron Set
One of the very first Iron set that TaylorMade ever made. M3 iron set is one of the bases of their modern Monalisa’s. All of their works are nothing less than art in my book. Speaking too high? Try out one for yourself.
The handles of the iron are made out of steel. The irons are also right hand dominated.
Ribcor technology specializes in increasing the flex of the face. More flexibility means more energy for the ball. More energy in the ball means the speed of the ball increases. Ribcor technology also reduces the vibration of the iron by a large margin.
Thanks to the Max-cor design TaylorMade improved the consistency and ball control super highly.
The price difference between the M4 and M3 is quite high. That’s why I added the M3 instead of M4 on my list. I think this iron set still got plenty to give. Especially to handicapped players. The control and spin are too good to pass on this budget.
8. Callaway Golf 2018 Men's Rogue X Irons Set
Callaway Golf Rogue X is the smaller brother of the original Rogue from 2018. It’s smaller in size and price. one thing that it is not smaller in is the performance. Like it’s bigger brother, this one also features the VFT technology. I love VFT technology.
It’s not on par with injected technology but it’s nearly there. Instead of leaving the inside of the hollow, Callaway uses three layers of material to improve the vibration.
This technology also improves the flexibility of the iron by a long shot. Which results in better speed and accuracy. The extra width of the iron helps with the spin and forgiveness.
Like the bigger rogue, this also have Tungsten Weighting for Optimal Flight and Control and Urethane Microspheres for Phenomenal Sound and Feel
When a beginner asks for my suggestion, I suggest to them any good forgiving iron set has a recommendation from me. If that fits in a good budget, it’s even better. Like this, I can see Rogue X becoming a daily driver for a lot of you.
9. TaylorMade Golf M2 Iron Set
The last two iron set on our list is the least expensive overall. Both of them are priced below $500.
TaylorMade Golf M2 iron set is the budget set from TaylorMade under the M banner. We all know how good M5 and M6’s are. M2 shares the same parent configuration.
The shaft is made out of steel, not graphite. I have no issue with that. Graphite is more expensive than steel. The shaft is lightweight and suitable for both short and tall people. The chrome finish also looks quite good and attractive.
The irons of this set are quite forgiving. Thankfully beginners won’t be scared of using them. You will feel in control.
Make sure that you get the 2017 version, not the 2016 one. The 2017 version has a lot of updates and tweaks over 2016.
It’s quite good for the price, at this price it’s hard to find good iron sets. I am thankful Taylormade has something in this category.
10. Callaway X HOT Iron Set
Callaway X Hot was the middle ground for beginners and intermediate with a small budget.
Any intermediate will take distance over more spin any day. That’s exactly what this iron offer. More speed, more distance, and more control. The iron face is quite large, even if you misplace the shot it won’t punish you for that.
I know a lot of you guys love to spin and control on the ball more, for long distances can you tell the same? If you can then don’t take this one.
If your main priority is the distance, less vibration, brand value. This one has all of those. Sure it lacks some of the fancy technology from other products of Callaway.
But if you were in their shoes, could you say you would do it otherwise?
I know I am going all philosophical on you. But trust me, it’s not hard to justify some shortcomings when the price is the main concern.
There are many reviews on Amazon about the product. Most of them are 5 stars. I can assure you, the product is good. It performs excellent for the price.
